Anja Lanser

NICA Mountain Bike Coach
Anja started racing through the Wisconsin NICA circuit at the age of 12, and began racing in the WORS series soon after that. She built her way up from being a casual young rider to racing competitively across the country in junior UCI categories. Anja has been to multiple junior national championships for mountain biking, placing 4th in her category in 2021 and 18th in her category in 2024. For the last two years, Anja has volunteered as an ambassador for the GRiT organization that advocates for women and young girls to get involved in cycling and the racing culture. From hosting community rides and building confidence in riders' skills, to having craft days, she has put in hundreds of hours towards the community she grew up in. Since then, Anja has done personal training in a CrossFit-style gym, exposing her to multiple avenues of improving strength and fitness, including growing a large following in her morning classes. She has worked at a bike shop for several years. Her love and energy for cycling and wealth of competition experience at a young age give her a unique skill set to support NICA riders in the upper Midwest.

FAQs

Should you get a cycling or running coach?

A coach can help if you are short on time, have a specific endurance sports goal you want to accomplish, or simply want to improve your health and fitness while optimizing your time.

Coaches help you target specific goals, optimize your limited training time, and use the best available research, knowledge, and understanding of you as an athlete to create training plans that work.

We adjust your training for vacations, work deadlines, or unexpected fatigue so you keep progressing without burning out.

Having a coach helps you stay consistent and accountable—especially when motivation dips or life gets hectic.

Hiring a qualified, experienced coach is an investment in you as an athlete and person.

We work closely with you to support your health, fitness, nutrition, and mental fitness so you can accomplish your goals.

You’ll feel like there’s someone in your corner whenever we’re needed.

Plus, we have the experience as everyday endurance athletes ourselves to understand your unique time, ability, and skill challenges.

We are not former pros or sports scientists.

We are everyday endurance athletes who have busy lives with jobs, family, and other commitments.

Our athletes aren’t going to the Olympics or winning national championships – although who knows?!

We help ordinary people achieve extraordinary results.

Coach Paul has been using the adaptive training platform Athletica.AI as an athlete and really likes the progression of workouts, its responsiveness, and the variety of training.

It’s a great program that uses the best of the HIIT Science textbook created by Dr. Paul Laursen, a renowned sports scientist.

We use Athletica as a coach with the AI program building plans for athletes, and then coaches them through the plan and adds yoga and strength training.

We use the AI to build the base plan, then tweak it as needed based on your goals, progress, and how you’re feeling each week.

Here’s a video to learn what Athletica is all about.

You get the same full-custom, personalized coaching from Simple Endurance Coaching with both Training Peaks and Athletica.

With Training Peaks, your coach builds the training plan, and in Athletica, the AI program builds the plan.

For both, your coach monitors your training, supports your health and fitness with nutrition advice, strength training, and yoga for mobility.

We’ll help you decide which platform fits your goals and personality best—it’s not one-size-fits-all.

Both of those, honestly, will work, to a point.

You just don’t know, though, if it’s right.

You don’t know if the plan will get you over-trained or under-trained.

Plus, it can’t help you adjust to life situations.

That’s what a coach can do: Individualize your plan for your life.

Generic plans don’t know your training history, stress levels, or what’s sustainable for you. A coach does.

For example, one of our coaches got a text from an athlete who’s doing a half-Ironman this weekend. She said her HRV was yellow, and she was a little tired.

Her schedule had a light brick (ride/run) workout to prime her for the weekend, but if she did it, she might fatigue herself more.

So she and her coach decided to take the day off and just do some yoga recovery.

Another client, who’s pretty new to regular training, needed to build a bit of speed and power to improve his results in mountain bike races.

If he asked Chat GPT (and we did just to see), it came up with a plan that would probably break him.

Instead, his coach suggested doing targeted HIIT work, which the coach will carefully monitor to make sure he’s not digging a hole for himself.

Strength training and yoga for mobility are important for cyclists and runners.

Strength training helps you build stronger muscles, and that in turn allows you to handle more training stress.

We provide personalized strength training for endurance athletes of all ages and abilities.

With a stronger core and stronger hips, cyclists and runners can do more training and stay injury-free.

Yoga opens up your joints and lengthens your muscles in addition to building muscle in movement patterns that we don’t do running or cycling.

For example, poses like Low Lunge or Cobra counteract the typical movements in cycling and running and put us back in alignment.

These aren’t just add-ons—we build yoga and strength sessions directly into your weekly plan so they’re manageable and effective.

You’re never too old to improve your endurance and fitness.

While it’s true that our bodies change with age, a regular training program will keep many of the negative changes at bay.

For example, regular interval training can prevent a more rapid decline in your VO2max, while strength training can prevent the loss of lean muscle mass that comes with age.

With smart training, midlife athletes can continue improving performance and health for years.

This is one of the key reasons to have a coach in your corner.

All of the gains we get from training happen when we sleep and when we recover.

So managing recovery, good sleep, and strength training in addition to your regular endurance work is critical to maintaining good health and fitness.

We might schedule harder intervals after rest days, strength on lighter days, and yoga on your recovery days to keep things balanced.

There’s a lot of conflicting information about nutrition for endurance athletes.

Sometimes, athletes aren’t eating the right amount for their activity level and goals..

You might be consuming food that doesn’t work well with your dietary needs.

While we’re not nutritionists or registered dieticians, we have certifications in nutrition and can help you get started with eating right for your health.

We help you think of food as fuel—supporting your workouts, your recovery, and your overall energy.

You’ll start noticing a difference in your fitness within five to eight weeks of regular training.

Your clothing will fit differently and you’ll feel better.

You’ll also likely sleep better, recover faster, and feel more confident and motivated.

Progress with endurance takes some time to develop.

For example, if you’re planning to ride a 100-mile century, you need several months of endurance training to comfortably finish.

Absolutely! That’s the joy of doing hard things and finding adventure goals that are a little scary.

We’ll help you with everything you need to be ready for your event, whether it’s your first marathon or 30th.
