We Bring a Unique Blend of Experience, Knowledge, and Support to Coaching for Cyclists
I?ve been riding bikes for fun, recreation, competition, and mental health for over four decades.
Along the way, I?ve tried all the new things, read as much as I could, and asked as many questions of the smart people as I could.
But I coaxed as much success as I could out of a body with serious asthma and limited sports potential.
Along the way, I learned a few things.
And that is exactly what I bring you as a cycling coach.
We Support Your Journey as a Rider
My job is to support you at every step in your journey as a cyclist.
Two things set Simple Endurance Coaching from other coaching services
First, I have a broad and unique collection of experiences, knowledge, and research from decades of endurance sports, including cycling, running, cross-country skiing, even rowing.
Second, I use a unique holistic approach to coaching for the cycling training process, using your bike training along with strength training, yoga, and mental toughness work.
If you?re a gung-ho racer looking to reach the highest levels of cycling, I?m probably not your coach.
It’s Not Really About Winning, But About Success
In my view, you would hire a cycling coach to support you as you get faster and strong, as well as learn and grow every step of the way.
Plus we?ll have fun and challenge you at the same time.
I realize we have lives, and that we?re not turning pro at anything soon.
You need to find someone who understands your goals, your needs, and your past, someone who will push at the right times, and understand why you need to back off at others.
You need to find the right person.
I am a certified USA Cycling coach, an RYT-200 yoga instructor, RRCA running coach, and NCCA Personal Trainer and Nutrition.
I was also a middle-school English teacher for 23 years, and I bring a teacher?s growth mindset to my coaching.
Our Coaching Process is a Lot of Communication
When you hire Simple Endurance Coaching as your endurance sports coach, it?s important to know what you?re getting. So here is my process:
Step One: We Talk About Finding a Cycling Coach
By phone, coffee meeting, online, or smoke signals, we talk about your goals, dreams, concerns, and challenges.
Our goal is to first flesh out your reasons for finding a bike coach, and second, to determine if we think we would be a good fit for each other.
If you don?t think we?re a good fit – and there are zero worries in that – you can either carry on by yourself, or I can refer you to another colleague.
If you think you?re ready to take the step with me as your coach, then it?s time for step two!
Step Two: We Talk Some More, And You Write ? A Lot.
You will fill out an initial intake form that asks you to think about your past endurance training and competition ? if you?ve done races and such.
It also asks you to honestly consider your strengths and challenges as an endurance athlete ? mentally, physically, and emotionally.
And as your cycling coach, this is how I learn how to support you as you meet your challenges.
Step Three: The Training Plan From Your Cycling Coach
We?ll use Training Peaks to keep track of all of your workouts and various metrics, like heart rate, perceived exertion, etc.
You choose me as your Cycling Coach in your TP version.
We?ll start by creating two or three weeks of workouts. That initial time will need to be flexible as we figure out together what your needs are and what specifically works for you.
The coaching for cyclists workouts will fall into one of five categories:
- long, endurance rides/ runs
- short, really hard intervals
- strength training
- yoga or mobility training
- rest and recovery
Your strength and yoga work can be at my Foundation studio if you?re local to Milwaukee or meet online if you need help with form or execution.
Step Four: We Talk Again
You can see that communication is a key element with me as a cycling coach!
I need to know how the workouts are going, how your recovery is progressing, how you?re sleeping, etc.
The more I understand about how your body and mind are responding to the training stress, the better I?ll be able to target the right workouts to meet your needs so that you?re ready for your target event.
Step Five: Enjoy the Process – and the Results
You ride because you love it.
Accomplishing the daily challenges of building the training stress is a great part of the training process.
Finishing a hard strength training session or a challenging set of intervals or coming to a rest week after a tough block of training is amazing.
Coaching for cyclists means we?ll celebrate those small steps in the process.
Step Six: Accomplish Your Target Event With Support from Your Cycling Coach
Even if you don?t ?win? in your target event, you are still successful.
And no, that?s not some kind of ?everyone gets a trophy? thinking.
My most spectacular failures have become the basis of deep learning and understanding about myself.
You trained hard, you learned so much, you became stronger, more mobile, and faster.
And you will become more confident in your own abilities and strengths.
